Adeso’s work in Somalia dares to reimagine and exemplify a decolonised model for the humanitarian aid and development sectors. Each initiative is centred in the community and builds off of our deep, historical roots in Somalia. We believe those most affected by the challenges that they face, must have the agency, power and resources to co-create the solutions needed to thrive.
Durdur Water Enterprise
WASH and Emergency Response
In 2022, Adeso launched Durdur Water Enterprise, a water utilities social enterprise to provide long term water security in rural areas of Somalia. Durdur provides clean, affordable and reliable water in a sustainable manner to community members in water scarce parts of Northern Somalia. Finalizing its pilot water network in Badhan, Adeso plans to replicate these networks across rural Somalia, directly reaching tens of thousands with clean and affordable water.

Saxansaxo - survivor and community led response (sclr)
With the Saxansaxo approach, Adeso is working alongside communities to co-create a new story that is shaped by their values, powered by their own resourcefulness and built on their capabilities. This approach is built on the foundation of collective compassion found in communities in crises and aims to strengthen and scale up existing initiatives already started by community members through providing micro-grants. This means the solutions come from the crisis-affected community members themselves, and Adeso’s team can help increase the impact of their initiatives to help each other to survive, recover with dignity, and to start addressing the root causes of vulnerability.
