Meet Mary from Marsabit

Mary’s tailoring shop

Mary is one of the youths from Marsabit County who has benefitted from Adeso’s Pastoral Youth Education Initiative (PYEI). In partnership with the Wellspring Philanthropic Fund, Adeso created the PYEI program with the goal of expanding the educational and economic opportunities available to women and young people. PYEI provides youth with education, employment, and economic support. School dropouts and other unenrolled students have access to scholarships to encourage school attendance, and PYEI operates several non-formal education centers to educate youth outside of school. To improve youths’economic prospects, PYEI provides vocational training to the underserved and offers business start-up kids to Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) graduates.

PYEI was there for Mary when she was most in need. Mary was forced to drop out of school due to financial constraints and illness. She had no hope of going back to school and was struggling to afford basic necessities. Fortunately, when Adeso brought PYEI to Marsabit County, Mary was identified as eligible to benefit from the initiative. When she became part of the initiative, she immediately started a tailoring business that thrived in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic in April. Although business was slow in the beginning, Mary persevered and is glad she did. She happily shares with Adeso staff that perseverance paid off when her business started picking up. She has now tripled her initial profits! The earnings from her tailoring shop have enabled her to save money and support herself and her family.
