Sustainable Coastal Restoration and Development for Somalia Phase II



The livelihoods of the majority of Puntland communities who depend on natural resources for their survival is under threat by climate change impacts such as droughts, storms, cyclones and floods. The unpredictability and inconsistency of rain has increased the frequency of drought occurrences.  Future predicted rise in global temperature will lead to even greater variations in the climate. By promoting sustainable natural resources management through rainwater harvesting and afforestation/reforestation, coastal and inland, there is an opportunity to build community resilience to withstand the climate extremes.

Our Approach

This Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation two year project that aims to rehabilitate coastal habitats and improve fisheries management in the coastal area of Puntland, Somalia through activities relevant to the needs of the target areas and in line with the Puntland Climate Change and Drought Management Strategy (2017 – 2019). The project will build on the successes of its first phase implemented 2015-2016, which developed practical community-level responses to illegal fishing and provided training to communities in coastal ecosystem management, while restoring mangroves and planting date palms to stabilize the soil and improve food security and livelihoods.

The second phase of the project will increase opportunities for fishing communities, farmers, and other community members involved in environmental protection, and restoration of coastal habitats.  Using an adaptation and mitigation strategy, the project will have the following areas of focus: increasing food security by promoting local food production (fishing and farming); protecting the marine and coastal ecosystems for sustainable use of fishing resources. The project activities will include mangrove plantation; protecting the biodiversity through the implementation of best practices, particularly focusing on endangered species (including adaptation training for local communities), and improving livelihoods by diversifying income sources of communities as a buffer to climate-related risks.

Expected Outcomes

This project is expected have a positive impact on economic, social and coastal ecosystems by strengthening climate change resilience of local communities and enhancing their ability to anticipate and adapt to the negative effects of climate change. As well as reduce the prevailing poverty in the target areas and the diversification of income sources of communities as a buffer to climate-related risks. The project aims to do that by promoting sustainable natural resources management through rainwater harvesting and afforestation/reforestation of coastal and inland and providing community member with fishing and farming skills and tools to enable them to enhance their fishing and fishing productions and this will eventually improve food security.
